  • Directions to the cottage from London on the A40.

    1. Ensure you take the A40 turn off to Oxford at Junction 8. Follow this Oxford by-pass taking signs to Cheltenham, should you have missed Junction 8 then exit Junction 9 and follow signs for Oxford and Cheltenham rejoining A40.
    2. Do not go through Cheltenham. Off A40 take A436 on left to Gloucester, continuing this winding road.
    3. Ignore signs to Cirencester. Take A417 Gloucester by-pass.
    4. Each roundabout ensure follow signs for Ross on Wye.
    5. Cross River Severn and after 'over market' follow A40 Ross on Wye signs, not 'Forest of Dean'.
    6. Continue A40 towards Ross on Wye.
    7. After 'Solomons Tump' take A4136 Monmouth road at Huntley: the A4136 is on left through Huntley Village at traffic lights and before local company called Timber Products. You are now on main Gloucester/Monmouth road.
    8. After signs to Cinderford on left continue travel 4136 for approximately 1.5 miles [do not go into Cinderford].
    9. At Swan Pub on right at Brierley note two signs for Ruardean and the Pludds [Manager of Pub, Mori, knows cottage if stuck]. Take the Pludds sign and road uphill to the Pludds.
    10. Continue up winding road, to top of hill, an approximately 200 yards past the BT phone box turn left at sign 'High Beech'.
    11. Continue up this road known as High Beech Road for some 600 yards. Turning left into road marked by 'No through Road' sign. [This is highest point of the Pludds with views of Wales, Black Mountains and Wye Valley in front of you].
    12. Take this road to the first white house facing you, it has "High Beeches" plaque on wall. You have arrived! You can park on land outside the black gate. Once into porch and through main door the outside light switch on left hand side.
    13. Remember always to close gate to keep out sheep.

    High Beeches is located in the Royal Forest of Dean - a beautiful ancient area of unspoiled woodland which lies twixt the great rivers Severn and Wye on the borders of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Wales. Its unique isolation and blissful tranquility belie the fact that it can be reached by road or rail in under 3 hours from London, Sheffield or Manchester and less than one hour from Birmingham, Bristol, and Cardiff. Nearest rail stations are Gloucester and Newport. Birmingham International Airport - a gateway to Europe & USA - is within 90 minutes driving distance and London's Heathrow is 2 hours by car and easy train access from Reading to Gloucester, Bristol and Newport rail stations. Directions are given on this web site for travel from London on the A40, & High Beeches is also within easy access of the M4, M5 & M50 Motorways as well as many major roads.
