Animals at High Beeches - Rules of the Forest - Countryside Code

Sunset

Please keep the sunset peaceful. Do not let unruly animals spoil the magical views and vista & the peaceful pastime of sitting on the cottage terrace with a sundowner watching the local aircraft land in the field 1000ft beneath us. Keep the children from being too noisy also - in the Royal Forest and when high sound travels.

The Countryside Code

When in the countryside please:
  • Be safe - plan ahead and follow any signs
  • Leave gates and property as you find them
  • Protect plants and animals, and take your litter home
  • Keep dogs under close control
  • Consider other people
When in High Beeches please:
  • Always close the front  gate at High Beeches after arrival & departure to keep animals from straying into the garden
  • Always close & lock the garage-cum-games room door with its padlock. Animals enter especially at night - tho' check no birds are trapped  inside!
.. and when in the Royal Forest of Dean & Wye Valley please:
  • know your rights of access to different kinds of open country, including where you can horse ride, backpack, climb and cycle
  • remember you must control your dog at all times so that it does not disturb or scare farm animals or wildlife.
  • You should keep your dog on a short lead on areas of open country and common land between 1 March and 31 July to avoid worrying lambs and ewes, and disturbing nesting birds.
  • Please also keep your dog on a lead during the lambing season on enclosed farmland (1 December to 30 June)
  • be aware that our weather can change rapidly especially if you are visiting the Black Mountains or Brecon Beacons. When venturing into open country ensure you are correctly clothed and equipped. Always carry a map and compass and know how to use them.
  • Be prepared to change your plans if conditions are adverse
  • be careful not to disturb ruins and historic sites
  • prevent uncontrolled moorland or forest fires. Moorland and forest vegetation can be dry at any time of the year, so do not light fires and be careful when siting camping stoves or barbeques
  • Wild animals, ponies and livestock can behave unpredictably if you get too close, especially if they’re with their young - so give them plenty of space.
Animals at HIGH BEECHES

Porcelain hog in front of fireplace

Remember animals are welcome at High Beeches but please not upstairs and do not use the garden or the grass in front of the property as their toilet.

They can be walked through the forest quite easily within minutes -   out of the front gate turn right to the road, and right again along the road past two properties - then follow that path down into the forest.

Alternatively, walk up the road straight in front of the property,  turning left at the first little path following that down and round to the left into the forest.

Respect our Royal Forest of Dean & Wye Valley

Another ancient right is pigs in the Forest. This allows the locals to graze their pigs in the forest in the autumn months, where they feed on the acorns from the oak trees. Occasionaly the hogs have wandered into the garden at High Beeches which is home to one of the oldest oak trees in a private garden residence.
Do not be frightened of them - same rules as for encountering a wild boar!
